Thank you for a great start of the school year! I appreciate everyone sending back their beginning of the year paperwork for both the school and for myself (Getting to Know Your Child, Blog Permission Slip and personal contact info for me to get a hold of you). If you haven't had a chance, please send it in as soon as possible.
Last week, I sent home a white bag for the All About Me Bag. Please have them back to school by Thursday, August 30 and we will begin sharing them. This week, coming home in Tuesday Folders will be a small pennant that your child can fill out and create themselves (with some help from you). Please return it to school at your earliest convenience and we will also be sharing them with the class and creating a classmate banner. Thank you!
Rules and Procedures-
The first few days of first grade were filled with lots of rules and procedures for both the school and the classroom. This week, we will continue reinforcing and practicing the rules and procedures but also learning how to be a good friend, giving and showing respect and perseverance. We spend a few weeks practicing to set the foundation for independent learning and centers in the upcoming weeks.
Each child's social-emotional well being is incredibly important to me so we spend the first few weeks of school building our classroom community by discussing what makes us special and unique, celebrating our differences and our similarities (All About Me Bag and pennant). The purpose of building our classroom community helps every child feel safe to celebrate what makes them unique and understand we may need different tools to help us learn new skills. What one child needs to learn math facts or help them write, another student may not- AND THAT'S OK! Once students feel safe, they are willing to make mistakes and know it's ok. They can teach and help one another. My goal is to give each child what they need to help them successfully learn and master the 1st grade proficiency scales before moving onto 2nd grade in a positive classroom environment where they feel respected and loved.
We will be practicing a few letters of the alphabet (uppercase and lowercase) each day to learn proper letter formation and sound. We also jump right into using the letters we practice and create the words we use by stretching each sound to make a word. We are beginning our journals, working on math (ten frames) and writing our goals about what we want to learn in first grade! Hopefully, when your child comes home, they are tired. We work hard in 1st grade but we love to have fun!
Have a great week!
